8 Core Sessions 

Wednesdays - May 5 to June 23, 2021 

4:30 - 6:30 pm Pacific; 6:30-8:30 pm Central, 7:30-9:30 pm Eastern

Two optional Saturday group sessions

We are offering two optional group sessions to understand and heal the personal impact of historical and collective trauma using tools from family constellation work and interpersonal neurobiology.

May 15 - Resonance and Empathy

June 19 - Healing and compassion for the strategies that no longer serve us.

1-on-1 personal session

All participants will have an option to book a personal session on coaching, constellation, or empathy work with Leonie, Alejandra, or Sheila.

Course Content

Nonviolent Communication is a way of thinking, speaking, and living. It is a powerful set of tools to increase our compassion, understanding, and authenticity to get everyone’s needs met.

How do we make sense of this from an anti-racist, anti-oppression (ARAO) point of view, when some people do not understand institutional power and power dynamics? And how can NVC practices address the needs of people of colour?

Sessions 1-4: We learn the foundations of NVC through an ARAO lens including:

  • Different types of observations, including systematic observations that help to anchor compassionate inquiry
  • How emotions help us to get clear about what is important and can clarify strategies for growth
  • How requests build trust and partnership, especially when working across differences

Sessions 5-8: We learn practical skills that we can use in situations such as:

  • Responding effectively to acts of racism in a way that reduces harm to us as BIPOC
  • Advocating for what we want in ways that are more likely to make a difference
  • Transforming the self-critical voice and undoing colonised thinking
  • Holding ourselves and others without judgment through focusing on the values underneath them
  • Preparing for and navigating difficult conversations


Recordings will be available for participants until August 23, 2021. By registering, you are agreeing to be recorded and for the recording to be shared with participants. We encourage all to attend the live sessions to get the most learning and connection.

Leonie Smith is a first-generation Canadian of Jamaican heritage. She is founder of a consultancy dedicated to supporting organisations and individuals to find ways of working that are less harmful and more inclusive, The Thoughtful Workplace. She has more than 20 years experience in senior management positions championing an approach to leadership that supports care and efficiency towards a shared purpose.

Alejandra Delgado uses her talents to support the creation of healing spaces that strive to be anti-racist and trauma-informed. She is committed to deepening her critical awareness while using her knowledge of relational neurobiology and Nonviolent Communication to support her own healing and that of her communities. Her Masters in Education from Stanford University and her time as a classroom teacher equip her to design learning experiences that are accessible to diverse learners. Alejandra is an organizer and assistant for the Nonviolent Leadership for Social Justice Intensive, helping those who seek to integrate critical awareness and NVC consciousness into their professional and personal lives.

Sheila Menezes holds sacred our shared humanness, alongside the unique depth and uncanny wisdom that each of us stewards. She has brought NVC into San  Quentin State Prison with the Safer Communities Project since 2015. She  helps build cultures of empathy by training people in compassionate leadership, socio-emotional skills and effective communication oriented  toward connection, clarity, and collaboration. She is an Executive  Coach, Leadership Trainer, Facilitator, Mediator and certified EQ-i 2.0 /  EQ 360 (Emotional Intelligence) Practitioner. She is certified through  the Co-Active Training Institute (CTI) and a Collaborative Trainer with  BayNVC. While she is results-oriented, her approach fosters hopefulness  grounded in a vision of holistic wellbeing, equity, transformative  justice, and antiracism.

Mika Maniwa is a certified NVC trainer of Japanese descent based in Vancouver, British Columbia. As someone who takes great delight in uncensored expression, she is constantly learning how to embody NVC values without the jargon.  She enjoys working with multicultural groups and is interested in what is needed to create safety and trust between people across power differences. She lives for the moments when a sense of synergy and collective wisdom might emerge in a group, especially after working through conflict. (Mika will be leading Saturday sessions)
